Germ line cells (sperm and eggs) are the only cells to experience romance in the human way. All other cells divide asexually, living as experientially-immortal hermits. Only sperm and egg cells search and search for a partner, and the cruel fate is that most never find one. But there is a certain beauty even in their failed quest for never-requited love which we in our quests for hopefully-requited love might learn from.
The two artists of this piece were once lovers. Ultimately, an aborted pregnancy brought their relationship to a close. This piece is a recreation of their conceptive moment but with one pivotal difference: the artist's menstrual blood takes the place of her fertile ovum. Three videos taken from a confocal microscope follow the sperm's search for love in this pink sea of platlets. We as viewers know that ultimately the blood is infertile - there is no hope of a future for each wriggling sojourner. But still between the grey bookends of birth and death, their rose-tinted journey of romance floats beautifully.
